SENSORY BIOLOGY EDUCATIONAL CONTENT
Transdisciplinary Education in Biology and Engineering Technology | VIRTUAL REALITY
This experience uses virtual reality technology to educate student on motion vision and spatial navigation. The BmE program collaborated with UC SIM (UC Center for Simulations and Virtual Environments) to design and develop a virtual reality experience.

The experience features four different scenes, and is optimized for the Oculus Quest compatible virtual reality systems.

-
SCENE 0 – The user appears in the “lobby” scene and is provided the introductory context for the VR experience.

-
SCENE 1 – The user will be in a starfield, a space with no floors or walls. The user will walk in an L-Shape path and be asked to return to their starting position. This will teach the user how internal navigation system functions.

-
SCENE 2 – Scene 2 is the same as scene 1 with the exception that the starfield drifts slowly clockwise around the user. This demonstrates the effect of visual motion on the sense of motion through space.

-
SCENE 3 – Scene 3 is the same as scene 1 with the exception that a stationary object is located on the user's right side at the starting position. This will teach the user how their external navigation system functions (i.e.. the importance of visual landmarks).

-
SCENE 4 – Scene 4 is the same as scene 3 with the exception that the object moves when the user is not looking, This will teach the user the relative strength of internal vs. external cues for sense of space (i.e.. the internal measurements of walking and turning will be in conflict with the external stable landmark).

| Color Vision Games
-
Training – Use the following app to familiarize yourself with the color vision game. This app and the game requires users to work in groups of at least three. At least one person in a group should wear goggles with red filters, one person should wear goggles with blue filters, and one person should wear goggles with green filters. https://colorvisiontraining.anvil.app/

-
Game – After groups practice identifying colors using the training program, they can run a competitive version of the color discrimination game to reinforce learned concepts and collaborative interaction. https://colorvisiongame.anvil.app/
